SHINEC ACTS FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

World Environment Day on June 5, 2024, initiated by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), focuses on “Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience.”

UNEP calls on global nations to restore land, combat desertification, enhance drought resilience, slow climate change, protect nature, and improve livelihoods and food security for billions worldwide.

According to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, 40% of the planet’s land is degraded, affecting half the global population and threatening nearly half of the global GDP ($44 trillion). Drought frequency and duration have increased by 29% since 2000, potentially impacting over 75% of the world’s population by 2050 without urgent action. Land restoration is a primary goal of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030), involving policies, initiatives, and global and regional cooperation mechanisms to protect and revive ecosystems to achieve Sustainable Development Goals.

In line with combating climate change and restoring land, Shinec Joint Stock Company (Shinec) has continuously increased green land area in Nam Cau Kien Industrial Park (KCN). Currently, the green area ratio in KCN is 33%.

At the end of February 2024, Shinec launched the “2024 Tree Planting Festival,” planting nearly 1,000 various trees, including 15 banyan trees, 200 pink trumpet trees, 400 pomelo trees, and 400 mango trees. In 2024, to complete the entire green landscape in Nam Cau Kien Industrial Park and package the Nam Cau Kien Ecological Industrial Park product following ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) orientation, Shinec will plant over 3,000 various trees.

Water conservation is also an effective solution against desertification. All wastewater in Nam Cau Kien Industrial Park is treated and reused for purposes such as watering plants and cleaning roads.

To further improve water usage efficiency, water conservation, and aim for zero waste, on March 19, at the Vietnam-Netherlands business connection conference, Shinec signed a cooperation agreement with NX Filtration to conduct feasibility research on industrial wastewater reuse using hollow fiber nano filtration technology. The recovered water after filtration will be used for industrial purposes within the Industrial Park.

On May 23, at the Nam Cau Kien Ecological Industrial Park, Shinec cooperated with V-Leep II to organize an in-depth Net-Zero workshop for businesses operating in the industrial park.

This activity is the first step in the cooperation agreement between Shinec and the Vietnam Low Emission Energy Program II (V-LEEP II), funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), signed on February 28, 2024. The workshop, with experts from V-Leep II, helped participants understand Net-Zero concepts, basic conditions of Net-Zero, the necessity of Net-Zero for businesses, and methods to achieve Net-Zero.

The workshop also provided a roadmap for greenhouse gas emission inventory and Net-Zero implementation according to the Vietnamese government’s regulations and a list of sectors and criteria for evaluating businesses required to conduct greenhouse gas emission inventory.

Following the event, Shinec sent survey emails to businesses in Nam Cau Kien Industrial Park to conduct sharing sessions, support businesses in greenhouse gas emission inventory, and participate in the carbon credit market with Shinec. The aim is to achieve Zero emissions in Nam Cau Kien Industrial Park by 2030.

Businesses in Nam Cau Kien Industrial Park support and join Shinec in implementing environmental protection solutions, such as planting and caring for trees within their premises and complying with emission regulations by law.

Notably, Tan Thuan Phong Co., Ltd. is one of the three entities first licensed by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to operate in hazardous waste treatment. In response to World Environment Day 2024, Tan Thuan Phong has implemented a process to treat sludge waste into light slag, creating a nutrient soil type for tree planting.

In June, Shinec will launch an environmental response day with the participation of all employees and businesses in Nam Cau Kien Industrial Park.
